News » 28.11.2025 - China: Yunnan flower industry accelerates global expansion

Customs data shows that China's flower import and export trade reached $782 million in 2024, an increase of $72 million compared to 2023, representing a year-on-year growth of 10.15%. Among this, exports amounted to $516 million, up 17.78% year-on-year, while imports fell to $266 million, down 2.16%.

Flower exports saw significant growth in 2024, with export value reaching $516.3419 million, an increase of $77.9496 million year-on-year. The export rebound was driven by strong performance in five out of seven categories, except for declines in seedlings and bulbs. Potted plants and garden plants led the growth, with a net increase of $85.6645 million, surging by 48.53%, followed by fresh cut flowers, which saw a net increase of $23.2358 million, up 17.22%.

As a major flower production hub in China, Yunnan Province has a total flower cultivation area of 1.95 million mu, including 350,000 mu dedicated to fresh cut flowers, with an annual output of 20.6 billion stems. Potted flowers cover 149,000 mu, producing 1.04 billion pots. With improving customs clearance efficiency, flower exports to South Asia, Southeast Asia, Russia, and Kazakhstan continue to grow.

To support export operations, Yunnan has built 832 standardized post-harvest processing workshops and 300,000 cubic meters of cold storage facilities, with over 1,000 shipping and logistics companies actively involved. Major exported fresh cut flowers include roses, carnations, lilies, eustomas, and hydrangeas, while potted flowers are primarily phalaenopsis orchids and cymbidiums. Statistics show that nearly 1 million pots of cymbidiums are sold to Vietnam annually over the past five years.

To accelerate the industry's development, efforts are being made to introduce more new varieties, enhance production technology, and improve profitability. An increasing number of companies are expanding into overseas markets, with a focus on South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and other emerging regions. Initiatives such as building overseas warehouses and cross-border cold chain logistics networks are being promoted, while key flower production regions are encouraged to integrate domestic and international resources and deepen global cooperation.
