News » 13.11.2025 - Kenya Flower Council and MPS join forces to boost sustainability in Kenyan Floriculture
The Kenya Flower Council (KFC) and MPS have announced a new partnership aimed at driving sustainability across Kenya's floriculture industry through the use of the HortiFootprint Calculator, developed by MPS and LetsGrow.com. This collaboration marks a major step forward in helping Kenyan growers measure and reduce their environmental impact while strengthening their position in the global flower supply chain.
The announcement was made during the IFTF in Vijfhuizen, where MPS and KFC jointly underlined the importance of data-driven sustainability and life cycle analysis (LCA) in floriculture. The HortiFootprint Calculator is officially recognized by both the European Commission and the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) as a FloriPEFCR-compliant tool for environmental performance analysis within the sector.
Developed for and by growers
The HortiFootprint Calculator is an easy-to-use software platform that allows growers to calculate the environmental footprint of their flowers and plants throughout all stages of production. The tool covers sixteen environmental impact categories, ranging from energy and water use to packaging and transport, and presents the results in a clear, visual dashboard. For growers already using MPS-ABC, adopting the tool is simple, since much of the required data is already available through existing registration systems.
"This tool is a real gamechanger for growers who want to demonstrate their sustainability efforts," says Arthij van der Veer, MPS Area Manager for Africa. "It's not just about compliance, it's about strengthening the supply chain and making smarter, greener decisions."
Clement Tulezi, CEO of the Kenya Flower Council, adds: "This partnership with MPS marks an important milestone in our sector's sustainability journey. The HortiFootprint Calculator enables Kenyan growers to benchmark, improve, and communicate their environmental performance using accurate, science-based data."
Chris Kulei, Chairman of the KFC Board, continues: "The collaboration between KFC and MPS reflects our shared commitment to innovation and responsible business. By using the HortiFootprint Calculator, we're not only supporting the growth and development of our members but also enhancing Kenya's global reputation as a leader in sustainable floriculture."
Support for Kenyan growers
Kenya is among the world's largest exporters of cut flowers, shipping to more than sixty destinations worldwide. The Kenya Flower Council plays a key role in advocacy, innovation, and compliance with international standards, including the Flowers and Ornamentals Sustainability Standard (FOSS).
By integrating the HortiFootprint Calculator into its sustainability framework, KFC provides members with a powerful tool to meet the growing global demand for transparency and environmental accountability. The partnership also includes training, capacity building, and support in data management to ensure growers can make the most of the system.
International recognition and future impact
Inclusion of the HortiFootprint Calculator in the FSI Basket of Standards ensures that Kenyan growers using the tool are aligned with international buyers, retailers, and certification schemes. This alignment opens up greater market access and strengthens Kenya's position as a sustainable flower exporter.
As the industry moves toward full compliance with FloriPEFCR standards by 2026, this partnership stands as a strong example of regional leadership and global collaboration, demonstrating that sustainable floriculture is both achievable and beneficial for everyone involved.
