Commercial cultivation of tulip has been gaining ground in Bangladesh due to its financial benefit. Tulip, which usually grows in colder countries, is being cultivated on a small scale in Bangladesh by some farmers. The flower known for its dazzling beauty across the world is also the national flower of the Netherlands and Turkey.

The flower bloomed for the first time in Bangladesh in 2020 as flower farmer Delwar Hossain cultivated it at Kewa Dakkhin Khanda village under Sreepur municipality in Gazipur.

He started cultivating tulip on an experimental basis with 1,000 bulbs in 2019 while flower bloomed in the last week of January, 2020, said Delwar Hossain, adding that a total of 70,000 tulip bulbs are being cultivated by some farmers in Gazipur, Jashore and Panchagarh districts this year.

He has decade long experience of successful cultivation of different foreign species of flower like gerbera and China rose. "We cultivated lilium flower after importing bulbs from a company Royal Van Zanten in the Netherlands in 2017. After successful cultivation of three years, the company gave us 1,000 tulip bulbs free of cost to cultivate on an experimental basis. Then, the flower blossomed after 22 days of cultivation of the bulbs," he said.
