News » 31.07.2025 - Belgian flowers bring color to the royal palace

On Monday July 21, Belgium's National Day, no fewer than 12,500 flowers brought color and charm to the gardens and façade of the Royal Palace in Brussels, reports Patrick Dieleman from AVBS. The blooms were supplied by nine Belgian ornamental growers. The Boerenbond (Belgian Farmers' Union) presented the floral display as a gift to the royal couple, while AVBS coordinated the logistics.

The National Day celebrations always attract large crowds of both Belgians and international visitors. Across from the palace, in Warandepark and the surrounding streets, there was plenty of activity and entertainment. Almost all branches of the military were present with information booths, skill games, and large equipment on display—designed to spark interest in a military career among young people.

Similarly, AVBS promotes careers in ornamental horticulture with its "Young, Wild & Tree" initiative.

Extra cachet
The stunning floral decorations, featuring 12,500 flowers, were the result of a close collaboration with nine Belgian growers, who contributed their finest blooms for this special occasion. The flowers adorned six large vases along the street, eight more in the palace garden, and even the Royal Palace balcony.

The creative direction was once again in the hands of renowned florist Sören Van Laer. He designed the arrangements and ensured every detail was perfectly executed on site. The vibrant displays featured Belgian-grown alstroemerias, carnations, gladioli, roses, and cut hydrangeas. "We deliberately choose flowers from Belgian soil," said Van Laer.

"What makes this initiative even more special is that the flowers get a second life after the parade," explained Boerenbond chairman Lode Ceyssens. The arrangements are donated to a selection of charities personally chosen by Queen Mathilde.

"With this gesture, we shine a spotlight on the craftsmanship and passion of our flower growers," Ceyssens concluded. "Their creations bring an extra festive touch to the National Day parade."
