News » 30.06.2025 - NL: Tulip artwork installed ahead of Trump visit
To mark President Donald Trump's visit to the Netherlands for the NATO summit, Royal Anthos – the Dutch trade association for flower bulb and nursery product exporters – has installed a tulip-shaped artwork along the highway (A44, just before the Leiden/Katwijk exit toward Wassenaar) which the president and his trade delegation are expected to travel. The artwork, shaped like a tulip and featuring the red, white, and blue of the American flag, symbolizes the long-standing bond between the Dutch flower bulb sector and the United States.
While Royal Anthos recognizes that President Trump's visit focuses on international security and NATO cooperation, the sector sees this as an opportunity to highlight the enduring economic relationship with the U.S. in a positive and visible way.
Blue tulips don't exist in nature, but for this special occasion, a stylized tulip sculpture has been created to reflect the American flag within a tulip shape. The piece is surrounded by thousands of red tulips – a color that not only appears in the U.S. flag but also represents President Trump's Republican Party.
A partnership between two nations
For more than a century, the United States and the Netherlands have shared a unique relationship in flower bulb trade. The U.S. remains one of the largest export markets for Dutch flower bulbs. Many of these bulbs are used in domestic American flower production, which depends on healthy, certified starter material from the Netherlands.
"This symbolic tulip along the highway is our sector's greeting to a valued trade partner," said Mark-Jan Terwindt, Managing Director of Royal Anthos. "We hope that President Trump and his entourage, as they pass by, will recognize the value of our long-standing cooperation. American growers can only thrive when they have continued access to top-quality Dutch flower bulbs. These products are vital – both for growers and for American consumers."
Royal Anthos calls on policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic to continue investing in free and sustainable trade. Not only is this vital for economic growth, but also because flowers and trees contribute to the well-being, livability, and beauty of everyday life for millions of people.
