News » 22.05.2025 - Flowers are increasingly becoming everyday purchases in China’s big cities

Lu Dao, an emerging lifestyle concept store in China, has pioneered a " flower market shop "at its Shanghai Qingpu location. This innovative space integrates fashion apparel, curated furniture, and live horticultural installations. Customers can select fresh-cut flowers, tropical plants, and pot plants while browsing clothing collections. This represents a strategic shift in China's first-tier cities, where floral purchases traditionally occurred through dedicated florists rather than shopping malls.

Traditional flower markets offer greater variety but are often far from city centers—sometimes 30 km or more. By placing a flower market within a shopping mall, people can easily browse with friends or family after meals, pick up flowers, and take them home—a convenient way to encourage home gardening.

The flowers here are cost-effective: cut helianthus, roses, chrysanthemums, and Myosotis alpestris are readily available at 15–30 RMB per bunch. Potted plants are another highlight, including Spathiphyllum, Pachira glabra, and Radermachera sinica (50 cm tall) priced around 40 RMB per pot. For Phalaenopsis orchids, small pots (12 cm) with delicate blooms are common. Larger, more expensive specimens still require a visit to specialized florists.

Similar to supermarkets in first-tier cities like Hema, which have expanded their floral offerings and delivery services (guaranteeing 30-minute delivery). While their selection is smaller than professional florists', the emphasis is on normalizing flower purchases—making them as routine as buying vegetables.

Historically, flowers in China were seen as luxury items reserved for festivals or special occasions, despite their low cost. Now, thanks to various market promotions, flowers are increasingly viewed as daily items. Consumers now embrace the idea of buying flowers—not just for celebrations.
