News » 25.04.2025 - Uncertainty among Dutch greenhouse builders active in the US

The American market is of great importance to Dutch greenhouse builders. Of the eighty greenhouse builders who are members of the Dutch industry organization AVG, about half are active in the US, according to chairwoman Annie van de Riet. It is therefore logical that the consequences of the current trade war, and all the uncertainty that comes with it, are significant. "We are talking about tens of millions of euros in damage," said Van de Riet in the Dutch newspaper AD.

In the newspaper, Richard van der Sande of Certhon indicates that Trump's actions have made companies reconsider their strategies. Producing locally to avoid import tariffs is an option being considered in Poeldijk.

While just over a month ago there was still hope for success with negotiations, Van der Riet is now not so positive about their outcomes. The short-term consequences are becoming increasingly clear.

However, there are positive prospects. The day after the announcement of the first tariffs, Van der Riet pointed this out. "The long-term prospects are very positive. There is a lot of interest in healthy, sustainably grown food."
