News » 14.04.2025 - Taiwan plans to promote orchids in US

The Ministry of Agriculture will cooperate with Taiwan Sugar Corporation to promote moth orchids in the US to avoid tariffs, reports said Thursday.

In 2024, Taiwan exported 40% of its moth orchids to the US for a value of NT$1.97 billion (US$59.92 million), out of total moth orchid exports worth NT$4.94 billion, Liberty Times reported. Even though the Trump administration decided to postpone the introduction of a 32% tariff on imports from Taiwan by 90 days, the measure still triggered concern from orchid exporters.

Agriculture Minister Chen Junne-jih (陳駿季) said a special task force had been formed to help the sector, per CNA. He told farmers in Tainan Wednesday that the government was offering them NT$50 million in financing support.

Within a month, a decision could be reached to boost cooperation between Taiwanese orchid growers and Taiwan Sugar to use the company's 5-hectare production base in California.
