 Met Éireann's farming forecast indicates that rainfall in Ireland will continue, with amounts ranging from two to four times the normal levels in the coming days. This unsettled weather pattern, characterized by showers, rain, and occasional heavy downpours, is expected to exacerbate soil conditions in agricultural fields. The forecast points to a deterioration in soil conditions, with moderately or poorly drained soils becoming waterlogged and other soils reaching saturation due to the anticipated rainfall. This situation is hindering planting activities.

The analysis of this weather pattern and its implications for agriculture comes as Met Éireann prepares to release its March weather analysis, which is anticipated to reveal that rainfall in Ireland was 140% of the normal amount. The potato sector, in particular, is facing challenges due to these wet soil conditions. According to Sean Ryan, National Potato chairperson of the Irish Farmers' Association, the adverse weather has disrupted early planting schedules and significantly reduced the planting of the main crop, further compounding the difficulties faced by growers following a challenging harvest last year.
