Attention to material use in horticulture continues to grow. Retailers and growers are taking an increasingly critical look at the weight, recyclability, and environmental impact of plastic products. With the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) on the horizon, this trend is becoming more relevant by the day.

For orchid growers, Dutch company Amevo has offered a ready-to-use solution for several years: a patented lightweight 12 cm orchid pot, developed jointly with Modiform. The pot weighs approximately 12 grams, roughly 30% less plastic than a traditional injection-molded pot of around 17 grams. That difference adds up quickly at scale. An orchid grower producing one million plants a year could save around 5,000 kilograms of plastic annually by switching to the lightweight pot.

"Material reduction doesn't have to come at the expense of cultivation or processability," says Maarten van Dorp of Amevo. "This pot has since been thoroughly tested in practice and has been used successfully for several years. Growers can rely on a proven solution that structurally reduces their plastic use."

Developed for orchid cultivation
The transparent pot is made from recycled polypropylene and can be recycled again after use. A central drainage hole in the cone ensures good drainage and aeration, which helps the glue plug in the substrate dry out more effectively during propagation.

Processing was also taken into account during development. The pot is compatible with virtually all common automation systems and allows for efficient table loading, combining material savings with practical benefits on the nursery floor.

Amevo as a partner for orchid growers
The lightweight pot is part of a broader range of products through which Amevo serves the orchid cultivation sector. Earlier this year, the company launched an improved pot mesh with a mesh size of 725 microns. The mesh does not shrink, so it stays in place throughout cultivation. Despite its fine mesh, it offers 93% light transmission, meaning light penetration to the crop is barely affected. The mesh can also be combined effectively with biological control agents.

In addition, through sister company Cas Zwaan, Amevo offers a wide range of orchid tying materials. Cas Zwaan originally invented the orchid hook, which is available in both rubber and paper versions.

"We want to be a specialized partner for orchid growers," says Van Dorp. "Not just with a single pot or a roll of mesh, but with products that fit the entire cultivation process. Together with the grower, we look at where material can be saved and where the cultivation process can be improved."
