News » 22.06.2026 - Taiwan: Ministry of Agriculture develops way to find carbon footprint of flower

Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture yesterday said a method to measure the carbon footprint of moth orchid seedlings has been developed, marking the first carbon footprint inventory for a Taiwanese floriculture crop. The method was developed by the ministry's Floral Industry Innovation Center and has been integrated into a program module.

Moth orchid farmers can calculate the carbon footprint inventory for their orchids simply by entering the required data into the module, center Planning and Services Division Director Wu Jung-yi said.

The carbon footprint inventory mechanism would help boost the international competitiveness of Taiwan-grown moth orchids, she said. The flowers' carbon footprint would be printed on their outer packaging, making them a more favorable choice for consumers with higher environmental awareness, she added. A moth orchid seedling planted in a 6.35cm nursery pot has about 0.4kg of carbon dioxide equivalent in carbon footprint, center data showed.

The module not only established a quantifiable benchmark for moth orchids' carbon footprint assessments, but would also help the industry identify major emission sources, the center said, adding that it has laid the foundation for further efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Power consumption is one of the major emission sources during the production process of moth orchids, as the plant is mostly cultivated in protected facilities, Wu said.
