News » 15.09.2025 - "Turkish cut flowers suffer in quality due to unusually high temperatures"

The production of cut flowers along the coast has been severely hampered by climate change and water scarcity, according to grower Selcuk Celebi from southwest Turkey. "Climate change is causing a significant loss in crops." Celebi continued: "At the moment, growers are going through the last phases before going bankrupt."

In the cut flower industry, producers are facing severe challenges as harvest draws near. Selcuk Celebi, a grower and exporter, stated that the climate has caused a considerable drop in product quality.

Selcuk Celebi added: "We're currently in the middle of the harvest season on the plateaus and coast, and the supply of cut flowers is at its highest. But since April, prices have been at an all-time low. The products are of very poor quality because of the climate. The items are of poor quality because of the extremely hot temperatures on the plateaus. Additionally, harvested goods lose value while being prepared for shipment. We lose as much as 70% of the products on some occasions."

Noting that growers are on the verge of bankruptcy due to the negative conditions, Mr. Celebi said: "The goods that were supposed to be ready for harvest are not ready, and then they suddenly become ready. The sudden harvest causes an excess supply. Because cut flowers have a short lifespan, this situation puts both growers and exporters in a difficult position. Water is also running out in the highlands. There are serious water shortages in the highlands of Antalya, starting from Konya. Therefore, the cut flower sector is also experiencing additional difficulties due to the water shortage."
