News » 15.09.2025 - Belarus invites Chinese firms to develop flower greenhouses
Belarus is seeking to expand its flower production sector with the help of Chinese investors. During his visit to Beijing, President Alexander Lukashenko invited companies from China to build greenhouse complexes dedicated to cultivating roses, orchids, chrysanthemums, and other flowers.
At a meeting with Chen Hongliang, head of Shandong Hualian Greenhouse Engineering, Lukashenko emphasized that Belarus offers favorable conditions for such projects. "Our domestic flower market is underdeveloped. Today, we import even from Ecuador. Belarus, Russia, and Europe all have strong demand, and competition is minimal. If you start producing tomorrow, your flowers will be warmly welcomed," he said.
Belarus sees several advantages to attract investors, among which are relatively low natural gas costs, surplus electricity due to its expanding nuclear capacity, and access to large nearby markets. Lukashenko noted that the sector could initially develop through joint ventures, but later allow fully Chinese-owned greenhouse complexes.
Currently, Belarus imports much of its flower supply, making it dependent on long-distance deliveries. Officials believe that local greenhouse production could quickly cover domestic needs and open new opportunities in Russia and Europe, where demand remains high.
The government has promised comprehensive support for greenhouse projects, positioning flower production as an untapped niche in Belarus's agribusiness. For Chinese companies, this could become a gateway to expand operations across Eastern Europe.
